3Dorothy A. DeBisschop, Historical Personalities of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, p. 35. . " ...  it has been said that the Rev. Mansfield was a slave owner. The Rev. Israel P. Warren wrote in 1874 that Mansfield had a woman named Hagar, who had two sons. One of the sons, Tobiah, was sold by the Rev. Mansfield to Captain Wooster of the area now included in Oxford. Tobiah was a grown man in the service of Wooster at the time of the American Revolution ..." http://www.oxfordpast.com/hp35.htm.

Tobiah's patriotism at last won for him the boon which, more than all else, he craved - his freedom ... he served long enough to win his own liberty, and enroll his humble name in the list of those brave men, who by their heroic endurance as well as active efforts, achieved, with the divine blessing, the liberty of their country ..."

6Israel P. Warren, Chauncey Judd or A Boy Stolen, Chapter 29. " ... respecting our friends, Tobiah and Rachel, and their descendants. After the war they, continued to reside in Derby, now Seymour, maintaining a respectable character in the humble class to which they belonged. The advantage of common schools, free to  all, the abolition of slavery, and the gradual abatement of prejudice against the colored race, have opened to them possibilities which were formerly denied them. One of Tobiah's descendants, a great-grandson, we believe, the Hon. Ebenezer D. Bassett, was appointed by President Grant, in l869, minister resident to Hayti, and now worthily represents the dignity of the United States at that republic."

"  Passing on to the Stephen Thompson house, anyone who has traveled over Chestnut Tree Hill in rears past, could not help notice the old low-? roof structure situated on one of the highest elevations on the hill. Thompson and his wife, Amy, lived here most of their lives. He followed the business of hatting in his early life at the time of the hatting boom which happened in Oxford back in the forties.  After the hatting business closed he returned to his farm. He was a very genial disposition and played the violin, during the long winter evenings it was quite a pleasant pastime for the neighbors to assemble at Uncle Steve's for a social time. He was a charger member of Morning Star Lodge, F. & A. M. in Oxford, which met in the building at the upper end of the green. Amy, his wife, died about 1857. He died in 1862. They had three children, one daughter, I forget her name or who she married, and two sons George and Lewis. George went to California and was gone several years, returning to Oxford about 1856, and spent the rest of his life in Oxford.
Lewis located at Lake Mahopac, N.Y, and was the proprietor of a summer hotel in that place, where he died many years ago." http://www.our-oxford.info/davis-reminiscences/Davis-04.html.
