in 1871. He was the son of Lucian Baldwin, who was an area farmer who taught schools during the winter.
    Herbert C. Baldwin's public career began with his enlistment into Company K, 13th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry in 1861, at the age of 21. He served in the battles of Georgia Landing, Irish Bend, Cane River, Mansuary Plains, Port Hudson and the Red River Campaign. He was under Sheriden in the battle of Cedar Creek, where he was wounded.
    He reached the rank of first lieutenant, given him for gallant and meritorious service at Port Hudson.
    Baldwin's business interests were mainly agricultural. He was elected assessor of the town and served several terms in that capacity. He was also elected to the post of fence viewer at the town's first town meeting. This position was elected to provide someone to check on farmer's fences when disputes arose over wandering livestock or fence repair.
    First elected selectman in 1873, he held that post continuously until 1890, and was chairman of that board all but two years of that time span. He also represented the town in the State Legislature in 1876,1880,1883 and 1891 as a Republican.
    He was married to Josephine H. Jones, by whom he had seven children.

JOHN. COE, A BEACON FALLS TANNER

    John Coe was born in Bethany in the area which later became Beacon Falls, on August 18, 1815. He spent his early years there and learned the tannery business from his father. He operated the family business for a time before selling it and moving to Derby He later returned and built a new tannery in the area which is now occupied by the Homer D. Bronson Company in Beacon Falls. This tannery was maintained bv his sons when he went into the leather business in New Haven under the name Ensign and Coe. He eventually sold his interest to Ensign and returned to Derby. He became Treasurer of the Housatonic Water Company. He was superintendent of a building project to construct a reservoir at the time of  his death.
    His son, Julius Curtiss Coe. was born in Bethany on August 3, 1838, in the area which later became Beacon Falls. He was the sixth generation of that famIly to carry on the leather
